Five years after Sushant Singh Rajput’s death, his family has decided to legally challenge the Central Bureau of Investigation’s (CBI) closure report that concluded the actor died by suicide. The CBI had cleared Rhea Chakraborty of all allegations, but the late star’s relatives say the probe was incomplete and misleading.
In its March 2025 closure report, the CBI ruled out any foul play, finding no evidence that Rhea Chakraborty abetted Rajput’s suicide or misappropriated his funds. The agency noted that Rajput was alone in his Bandra residence between June 8 and June 14, 2020, the period leading up to his death, and that neither Rhea nor her brother Showik visited him during those days.
Despite the agency’s findings, Sushant’s family remains unconvinced. Their lawyer, Advocate Varun Singh, accused the CBI of conducting a lax investigation and described the closure as an “eyewash.” He said the agency failed to produce crucial supporting material—such as chat logs, technical data, witness statements and medical records—and confirmed the family will file a protest petition against the report.
The CBI’s submission incorporated two separate closure reports filed earlier in 2025. One addressed a complaint by Sushant’s father, K.K. Singh, lodged in Patna, which accused Rhea and her family of driving the actor to suicide and mismanaging his finances. The other related to a case registered by Rhea against Sushant’s sisters in Mumbai.
According to the agency, Rajput’s financial affairs were overseen transparently by his chartered accountant and lawyer. The CBI also characterized expenditures made on Rhea—highlighting a 2019 trip to Europe—as legitimate and voluntary.
Countering those assertions, Advocate Varun Singh argued the report lacked transparency and documentary backing. “Simply stating that no funds were withdrawn from Sushant’s account is insufficient,” he said, demanding that the CBI produce detailed bank statements and other records. He warned that the closure report, based on what he called a shoddy probe, would not withstand judicial scrutiny.
The family plans to formally oppose the CBI’s closure report when the matter next appears before a Patna court on December 20, seeking further inquiry and disclosure of the investigative record.
