The planned sequel to Vijay Deverakonda’s 2025 spy thriller Kingdom has been officially shelved, producer Naga Vamsi confirmed in a recent interview with Idlebrain. After the first film’s lukewarm box-office response, hopes of building a franchise around Suri — Deverakonda’s constable-turned-spy — have been put to rest.
Producer confirms: Kingdom 2 is not happening
Naga Vamsi was blunt when asked about the follow-up: “No, we are not making it anymore.” He added that rehashing the reasons behind the film’s underperformance would serve no purpose and might only hurt director Gowtam Tinnanuri. “There is no point in talking about what happened because it’ll only hurt Gowtam. There’s nothing more to do now,” Vamsi said, signalling a decision to move on rather than dwell on the setback.
What went wrong for Kingdom?
Kingdom, released in July 2025, was positioned as a potential franchise starter. Gowtam Tinnanuri’s spy thriller introduced Vijay Deverakonda as Suri — a cop who becomes a spy — and its narrative left space for future instalments. Despite strong expectations and a franchise-friendly ending, the film didn’t generate the commercial traction the team had hoped for.
While box-office numbers didn’t justify a sequel, Vamsi was careful to protect his collaborators’ reputations and avoided detailed public critique. That restraint makes it clear the focus now is forward-looking rather than analyzing the past.
Relationship with the director stays intact
Although Kingdom 2 is off the table, Vamsi emphasised that his professional relationship with Gowtam Tinnanuri continues. “But yeah, we will collaborate with Gowtam. He is doing a different film now,” he said, hinting that both producer and director will explore new creative avenues outside the Kingdom universe.
Where this leaves Vijay Deverakonda
For Vijay Deverakonda, Kingdom was meant to be a comeback moment following some recent box-office dips. With the sequel cancelled, he won’t be returning to Suri anytime soon — but he does have other projects lined up. Most notably, Deverakonda is starring in the action film Rowdy Janardhana, directed by Ravi Kiran Kola, which is scheduled for release in 2026.
What fans can expect next
- New work from Gowtam Tinnanuri with a different project in the pipeline.
- Vijay Deverakonda’s next major outing in Rowdy Janardhana (2026).
- Producer Naga Vamsi likely to pursue fresh ideas rather than revisiting Kingdom.
Looking ahead
Shelving Kingdom 2 closes one chapter for a film that aimed to kick-start a spy franchise but underperformed at the box office. It also opens new possibilities: collaborators remain on good terms, and both the director and lead actor are already moving toward other projects. For fans of Vijay and Indian spy thrillers, the door isn’t shut on exciting cinema — it’s just that the Kingdom universe won’t be expanding any time soon.
