Akhanda 2 release put on hold hours before premiere
Nandamuri Balakrishna’s much-awaited Akhanda 2, directed by Boyapati Sreenu, has been abruptly postponed just hours before its scheduled global release. Paid premieres planned for December 4 were cancelled and the December 5 release has been deferred indefinitely, leaving fans and trade surprised and disappointed.
What happened on the eve of release?
Confusion around theatre bookings and show confirmations emerged on December 4. By evening, paid premieres were officially called off after distributors reportedly faced last-minute issues — including overseas KDMs not going through — forcing many exhibitors to pull shows. The production house, 14 Reels Plus, confirmed the delay on social media, calling it a “painful moment” and apologising to fans while saying they were working to resolve the matter.
14 Reels Plus: “With a heavy heart, we regret to inform you that #Akhanda2 will not be releasing as scheduled due to unavoidable circumstances.”
Legal and financial roadblock
The real roadblock appears to be legal. The Madras High Court has reportedly issued an injunction stopping the release after Eros International Media Ltd approached the court. Eros claims an arbitral award of around Rs 28 crore against 14 Reels Entertainment Pvt Ltd, an entity linked to the film’s producers, and argued that releasing the film under 14 Reels Plus LLP could be a way to avoid that liability.
The division bench’s order bars any theatrical, streaming or commercial release of Akhanda 2 until the matter is sorted, effectively leaving the film in legal limbo.
Industry and fan reaction — what’s next?
The postponement is a major setback for a project positioned as a pan-India tentpole, especially given Balakrishna’s massive fanbase and the film’s pre-release buzz. The makers have said a new release date will be set only after the financial issues are cleared, indicating this is more than a routine shift.
- Immediate effect: Paid premieres cancelled, international KDMs reportedly failed, distributors pulled shows.
- Legal issue: Madras High Court injunction following Eros’ claim of an outstanding arbitral award (~Rs 28 crore).
- Current status: Release postponed indefinitely; no new date announced.
For now, fans will have to wait longer to see Balakrishna’s powerful Akhanda avatar again. The industry will be watching closely to see how quickly the producers and creditors resolve the dispute and get the film back on track.
